Proposal and Outline

Reseach Proposal

The research proposal is one of the first parts of the research writing process. The proposal is your statement of what you want to do for your paper and how you are going to go about doing it. Also, it states why you are doing it and what you want to get from it. After writing the proposal, the professor can tell whether you work is going to be worth it. The proposal will give you a great start to forming your thesis, because you have many of the ideas that need to go into the thesis already down on paper. The proposal is not written without a little research done first. The student must pick a familiar topic, and look up as much information on it as possible. Then the student should pick what they believe is important to continue to research, and what things about the topic the readers of the paper should know more about.

The page that I have found online to help me understand the proposal was very helpful. I have posted a link so others can use it to better their own.

Research Outline

There are four main steps to creating a organized and helpful outline. The first is identifying the topic. This is obviously important for your research. The next is identifying the main categories. This will be helpful in organzing the different types of research you did and the different questions that you asked in your research. The next two are creating a main category and creating subcategories. This will help one be more organized.

My Proposal

TIITTTTTLLLEEEEE

The Deaf Community is one that many people overlook or forget about when planning events for the general population.  Many people do not think that someone may show up to a town meeting or to a presentation by a motivational speaker and not be able to hear what is going on.  This is a major problem that many people have, and I feel it is a major problem that is going on at the campus of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The Indiana University of Pennsylvania is one of the only schools in the state of Pennsylvania that is credited for their program of Deaf Education study.   Then why is it that many of the students who attend school here don’t even know of the program?  Why is it that there are not interpreters at all the programs that IUP holds?  Why is it that IUP is not as deaf friendly as it should be? These are the major questions that I want to answer with my research. The other is how can the students who are Deaf Education majors make the campus a more Deaf Community friendly environment. I feel it is our jobs as future deaf educators to make people aware of the amazing program that IUP offers and to make this campus friendlier for our deaf friends.

There are many aspects of this question that I feel are necessary to research in order to produce a first-class final research paper.  The first question that I must answer is going to be what the Deaf community is. Without this information, I feel that many people will just think that it is people who can’t hear, but it is far more than that. There are many journals that explain the Deaf community is a subculture of our own culture. The people who believe they are part of this culture are very proud of being deaf. I will use different journals to show the readers exactly what the Deaf culture is.

I will then need to provide research to what is exactly done at IUP for the Deaf Community. I will need to find out if there are interpreters available for students who are deaf or are there any at programs offered to all students on campus. In order to do this, I will first contact the head of the College of Education at IUP and the head of the Deaf Education department. Hopefully I will be able to meet with these men and interview them in order to find out exactly what is done at IUP for the Deaf community. I know that this will also be a money issue with how the state budget has been going these past few years. I will also have to try and find out how much money the College of Education gets and exactly what it goes to.

I also may be able to meet with the different deaf students on campus and ask them how they feel personally about the situation at IUP. These students will give me a more personal look at what is done for them here at IUP. I will find out the nights and times of the different deaf culture events that happen on campus and interviews these students if they are willing to give up their time.

I want to then be able to compare this to other campuses that have a Deaf Education program.  I feel it is important to see how we compare to these campuses. IUP should be very proud of their program, and therefore should show the students who attend exactly what they are working for with this program of study. I will have to email different schools that have this major, and find out much of the same information that I will when I talk to the head of our college of education and the head of our Deaf Education department. This may result in me doing some email surveys, or even phone interviews.

As I said, I want to talk to the students on campus that are deaf, and see how they feel. I know this will help me answer my final question about what we can do to better this campus and make it more deaf friendly. After finding out what other campuses do, I may be able to find examples from their programs. In order to do this I want to also interview other Deaf Education majors. I feel that they may also think that IUP should be doing more with the Deaf community.

This research is very important to me. I want to teach students who are part of the Deaf community and I feel that they should have the same rights as everyone else when attending college. I think that IUP is an amazing school and has an outstanding program but I still feel we can do more.
