Paper
Pre-writing – introduction paper
This paper is a very important step in the research paper writing process. I know this paper will help me realize the work that I need to get done and where my next step is going to have to be. I honestly right now have no idea how I am going to start this, I guess I need to do a free write, but once I start, I will get a better idea of where my paper is going and who my audience is. I also will know where I am going to have to research more and where my statistics need to come from. I want it to help my readers understand why I am doing this research paper, and how it is important to know about such happenings on college campuses. This section is going to be more personal than all of the other parts of my paper. I want the reader to know that I am passionate about deaf education and equality for deaf students. I imagine myself writing to two different audiences, the deaf community and the future educators community, so by writing this paper, I will be able to either write to both at the same time and find a happy medium, or chose one or the other, and write to just that group. I know that choosing the audience is very important and I hope that this paper will help me realize who I want to write to so that I can write accordingly and write to them.
Post-writing – introduction paper
Writing the paper has most definitely helped me focus my research more and determine an audience!! YAY!! Once I began writing, I realized that I cannot connect with the deaf community very well; in fact the only connection is that I am a deaf education major, and from what I have learned in classes about the deaf culture, they really do not care about hearing people trying to barge into their culture. So I decided to focus my writing to education majors. I was then able to write more of a connection. I said earlier that I believe that my intro would be more personal and I think I am right. I know my paper will not have as much personal flavor but more statistics and information to back up what I have said throughout the introduction. With writing the paper, I found that I knew more of what I wanted to research than I thought. I basically thought about what I want people to know, and that is what went into my introduction and what will go into the rest of my paper. I believe that I was able to show my readers that I am passionate about deaf education and maybe open more people’s eyes to what is happening on college campuses. Overall I am very pleased with how this paper turned out and how much it has helped me!
Pre-writing- lit review
The purpose of the lit review for me as the writer is to get all my sources organized and put together what I have taken from them. My reader in return will get a better understanding of the research that I have done and see what I am using to back up my research. This section will be different from the rest of my paper because it is the actual research section. In this section I will put down all of the sources that I have found and any important information that I believe is necessary for my research. I will not do this in any other section. With writing this paper, I hope to honestly get a better feeling about the process, but also understand what has been done on this topic already. I believe I have figured out who my audience will be and I hope to write to college and high school students so they are more aware of the deaf community when on a college campus.
Post Writing – Lit Review
As I stated, the main purpose of my lit review was to help me organize the information I found. I knew that I had some good sources that would help my readers better understand why im researching this and what the deaf community is. I found that from my sources I was able to get the points across that I wanted in an organized fashion using the lit review. Now that this section of the paper is complete, I no longer have to use other authors information, but I get to work on my own, which is what I was really looking forward to.
Pre-Writing – Methods
The methods section will help me put together all of the primary research that I have done. It will help my readers understand what I have done to get the information, who I have gone to to find this information, and how these participants are important. This is the only part of the paper in which I describe my methods of primary research. This will lead up to my results paper which will allow my readers to see what has come from my research. My goal is to have a better understanding of the whole research process from reading other methods papers and using them to help me write my own.
Post-Writing – Methods
Writing my methods has helped me understand what is needed to be done in this research. From reading other articles, I have seen how it should be done, and hopefully successfully done the same. I see how detailed I must be in order to receive accurate and important information.
Pre-Writing – Results/Discussion/Conclusion
This section of the paper will be the final section. This is where I will present all of my primary research to my readers and connect it to what I have found from other researchers. Also, I will answer my research question and explain to my readers why it is important for them to learn about what I have written about. This will be the only section in which I present my own information. It will also be different because I will be trying to tie all of the sections together. I hope to be able to easily relay the information I have gotten from my interviews to my readers, and in a manner in which is important to the paper. My audience has not changed. I hope that high school and college students will read this paper and realize there is a deaf community around them and try and interact and help them.
Post-Writing – Results/Discussion/Conclusion
I was able to use this section to let my readers know the information that I have found doing my own primary research. I explained why the information I have learned from my participants relates to the research I have found from journals. Also, I explained why it is important for readers to be aware of students who are deaf and hard of hearing. This section was different because it was my own data. I felt the last two sections were difficult because I didn’t have anyone to source I had to connect everything myself.

Introduction Paper Ideas – how to make it better
~ may want to use more sources to give the reader a bit more information
~ cite a source whenever you have information that is not common knowledge
~ YOU?????????????????????
~ we, us, ourselves – need to define this better – define who we are
~ May want to summarize what you said, and then foreshadow a bit
~ put questions at the end of the intro that you will answer in the rest of the paper

Murphy I really like your intro. I like how you set up the scenario, then completely throw a curve ball when you talk about being “normal” and “healthy”. This did grab my attention because I have had a scenario exactly like that. I really think the direction your going is good — good work! Haha that last part makes me sound like a camp counselor or something!

I wrote this to Paige, and I’m going to do the same for Bitsy, if you have any suggestions as to how I could redo this intro, because it is completely based on a hypothetical situation, which we are not allowed to use, please let me know! I’m having a rough time rewriting it and making it work without using you!

I think you are off to a great shitty start! haha. But no I agree with Kaitlin. It made me think twice when I read your first paragraph about how difficult it must be for someone to be deaf. I can’t even imagine!!! I think it will be interesting to see what all you find out at IUP and other colleges as well!

Wow!!!!! I love your first paragraph, it really captures my attention. I know we are not supposed to use “you” in our papers, but i did it too. I feel like it really captures the attention of our readers. I like how you used it. It really made me feel like i was there. I wanted to keep reading so i couls find out what was going to happen next.

Thanks, I guess I just went with the flow of what I thought would grab a readers attention, and really didn’t think about using the word you. I’m not sure yet how I am going to redo this intro, because I’m stuck on the one I wrote, blaaahhhh. If you have any suggestions let me know!!
